Nine things worth knowing before you pick a set

The alcohol range differs by the nib in your fingers, not by what comes out of it. Learn to blend on one line and the skill transfers to all three.

Opaque where ink gives up

The acrylic pens are paint, not dye. A white line stays white on black card, on a river stone, on a glazed mug: the surfaces a marker cannot hold.

Why trust this page

The claims, and where they come from

What the ASTM line on the box certifies

Under federal law every art material sold in the US must be evaluated by a qualified toxicologist and labelled to ASTM D 4236, and the conformance statement has to be printed on the product. It means the evaluation happened and any required warning is printed, and it is not by itself a promise of “non-toxic”, and we do not present it as one.

The guidance that does not flatter us

The American Academy of Pediatrics says water-based, unscented markers are a better choice for children than permanent ones, and advises checking for the ASTM statement and the ACMI seal, ventilating the room and supervising children. Our alcohol markers are solvent-based, so we print that advice whole rather than trimming it to the convenient half.
